The power of the mind: we all want to have more control over our thoughts, actions and fate. This is where Self Hypnosis can be particularly empowering. But before looking at Self Hypnosis, it is helpful to know a little bit about what is meant by hypnosis, by trance and by the term subconscious mind.
You've probably heard of hypnosis... you probably know someone who has been hypnotised, or may have taken part in a stage hypnosis show, or seen a hypnotherapist yourself. If so, you'll already know that many of the movie stereotypes are full of myths, and even the general public at large has been misguided on many occasions as to what hypnosis is, and is not.
Hypnosis has been used for thousands of years, although it has not always been know by the name "hypnosis". The healers' of old used directed trances (hypnosis) by guiding people into altered states of consciousness whilst giving healing suggestions. From priests, shamans, witches... from the Temples of Sleep in ancient Egypt to the Shrines of Healing in ancient Greece, all utilised the effectiveness of hypnotic suggestions in healing. Drums, chanting, dancing, fire and drugs: all have been used as ways to enter trance in the quest for healing and higher knowledge.
Fortunately you don't need drums or drugs to enter a trance state, it is a naturally occurring state. If you've ever daydreamed, or driven somewhere and 'lost' part of the journey... or even read a book and not heard someone call your name, you have already experienced trance.
So what does trance feel like? This is often a deep state of relaxation, which has profound effects on both your mental and physical well being. By quietening the mind, tapping into its inner resources and relaxing your body's physiology it has been scientifically proven to enhance health and longevity.
The difference between trance and hypnosis is that hypnosis uses the state of trance to direct your subconscious mind to achieve the goals that you want to achieve. Like a driver having a navigator in the passenger seat, providing directions to a given place, a Hypnotherapist would use hypnosis as a tool to direct the person's subconscious mind to achieve the person's goal.
Your subconscious mind is like a best friend... it is the part of you that makes your heart beat without you having to think about it. It takes on patterns of behaviour and physical tasks so that you don't have to think about them. For example, if I were to put my hand out to you to shake hands, you wouldn't have to engage in long-drawn out reasoning on what to do - your subconscious mind would simply direct you to put out your hand and shake mine back.
Whilst the subconscious' ability to take on these sometimes complex patterns and behaviours is very useful, sometimes it is counter-productive, for example in the case of a phobia. A person with a phobia knows on a rational level that there is no need to react as strongly, and often no need to be frightened at all. But at some time the subconscious mind felt that the situation or object was a threat and put in place a pattern to protect the person - a phobic response to get them to act immediately without thinking about it. After all, you don't get a person with a phobia of lifts who gets in, gets to the third floor and then says "Ooops!! I forgot, I'm phobic of lifts, get me out of here!". Instead the response is instantaneous - the person sees a lift and can't get inside to start with.
So now that we know a little about hypnosis, trance and the subconscious mind, what is Self Hypnosis? Self Hypnosis is where you become your own navigator... you set the goal and take yourself into the trance. It is where you get the opportunity to connect with your inner wisdom, tapping into the benefits of a more complete body-mind connection.
Self Hypnosis has been proven to help deal with both physical and emotional problems and ailments, and there are many well documented cases that illustrate this. In the past I have used Self Hypnosis to lose weight, overcome a needle phobia and to enhance my studies.
If all this sounds good to you, maybe you'd like to think just how you could use Self Hypnosis to make your life better, whether your goal is one of personal or spiritual development, or an emotional or physical goal such as weight loss or stress management. What would you like to improve in your life now?

Book Review - The Survivor Personality Author: Al SiebertIt has been said that it's not the events in our life that cause us to be happy or unhappy, but our response to them. The Survivor Personality investigates just what resilience skills those people who are nature's 'survivors' possess, whether they have survived in a concentration camp, successfully recovered against the odds from a terminal illness or survived some other major life event or situation.
Al Siebert has found that although these 'survivors' all differ, they all have certain traits and skills in common, such as objectivity, humour and persistence - and you can develop these skills too.
These survivor traits have a fascinating irony about them, as although you might think that to be a survivor is 100% positive, Al Siebert points out that the very traits that make one a survivor are those that are most often criticised by others. For example, survivors are often labelled as 'pessimists' as they anticipate problems. The difference between a standard pessimist and a survivor is that survivors are 'optimistically pessimistic' - they anticipate challenges, act on them and know that whatever happens they will not only survive - but thrive. Many survivors have also been labelled as having a 'warped' sense of humour, or of 'not fitting in' or 'not playing by the rules'.
The Survivor Personality offers keen insights and clear, practical advice and guidance on how to develop your resiliency skills. It offers true survivor stories to illustrate these skills in action, as well as a section on how to survive being a survivor!
Whether you want to read this book to help yourself or others deal with trauma or just to improve your strategies for coping with everyday life, The Survivor Personality is a truly absorbing read, that makes you come back again and again to pick out more on each reading.

Book Review: Harry the Hypno-potamus Author: Linda ThomsonLinda Thomson, a paediatric nurse and approved Consultant in Clinical Hypnosis, brings together 32 illustrated metaphorical stories aimed at teaching children how to help themselves through their imagination.
The book is aimed at all ages and the stories are written in such a way that they will be easily understood by even small children.
The stories deal with a wide variety of problems faced by children, both physical and emotional. It covers:
· Phobias and anxiety attacks
· Sleep disorders
· Habits and habit control
· Pain management
· Asthma and other serious medical disorders
· Death and dying
It weaves hypnotherapy and NLP into stories to address these issues through lovable characters such as Harry the Hypno-potamus, whose job is to persuade the animals to go and see Dr Dan, the zoo’s vet. Dr Dan helps them to see their problems through new eyes and to successfully overcome them.
Children will not only learn how to gain greater control over their emotions, thoughts and behaviour but also learn more about each animal they meet in these delightful stories.
Highly recommended for anyone who deals with children – whether in a therapeutic capacity or as a parent.

Article: Using NLP to Stop Smoking (or breaking the ‘chains of the free’)Together with many practitioners who have worked with clients to help them stop smoking, I have found out what works best through trial and error, building up resources as I've gone along the way.
Rather than going into too much detail, this article provides an overview of the key points that I have found most successful. I based my script for the "Freedom: Stop Smoking" CD around the principles shown here.
